about 6:30. Nan Moore came soon afterward, but she had had her breakfast and wouldn't eat another, but sat down with us. Then we 3 went up town and I bought some sneakers & left my shoes to be stretched (they pinched) and we took the Jefferson Ave. car out to Belle Isle Bridge and walked across and to the lovely new club house, to which Nan had a card. It is a beautiful sort of Southern California style of place - nice big halls, fireplaces, ball rooms &c and dolphins & fishes carved &c. &c. Nan got a nice boat with two pairs of oars and we rowed together all over the lovely Belle Isle - at least 7 miles. First where it was narrow and cultivated & formal, & under bridges and over skating ponds (in winter) and past the Casino, the conservatories, &c. &c. and later the zoo. Then up thro' the wilder, natural (and most beautiful) part and finally around the top end and thro' the big artificial lake and down the river outside & left the boat just in time to dash across and take the 10 o'clock boat back to the city. It was promising to be a hot day and our tall glasses of ginger ale did taste good and the breeze felt good. The Bucks were on & Laura got off with them at the lower dock & Nan and I went on up for my
