supper. (Laura too) After supper Laura and I played Flinch and saw a
lovely sunset on deck and then we all played 500
6-handed euchre. Arrived at Marquette
rather late - after passing some islands &c We all took walks.
Mrs. Foster, Mr. Mace and I ahead and
the other 3 behind. Marquette is hilly and we kept
climbing. Nothing was open but the saloons. While Mr. Mace and
I were counting them the others lost
Mr. Foster but we kept on around a block or two and when we got
to 25 and nearly back to the boat we found him! The harbor looked very pretty
by moonlight & electricity - also the island opposite.
July 28 Thurs.
A cool and cloudy morning. Immediately after breakfast we tied up at
"Dollar Bay" in the copper regions - a most interesting place -
with the dock piled up with copper in all forms and all colors of the rainbow
- purple to brightest copper color. We had time to go in and watch a little of
the smelting process but I had to take the picture I did as the steamer's
whistle been - with a rather out landish result! Mr. Freidman
was very polite and nice. He's from this region and told me about things. We
watched them marking ingots. &c.
