the road and the trolley through. It was dark by the time we got to the top of
the notch and
pitch dark coming down into So. Hadley -
tho' it was only a little after five! We found most of the girls back. We
dressed up for dinner and the dining room was quite full - sat over in
Edith's regular place at Mrs.
Fairchild's table, near Sidney Babcock and some
other- one girls, fat and jolly (I forget her name) had been to the Harvard -
Yale game and then to New York for the first
time and of course she had lots to tell about. After dinner some of the
Psi Omega girls came up in Edith room
and had chocolate. It was Bab Tillinghaste's birthday.
She was there and Catherine Carpenter (whom I found very
attractive)
Miss Macpherson and her sister (visiting her) Jessie
Caton (Edith's
Foxboro' friend) and some others (one, I can't think of her
name reminded me of Alice Bunnell) They were
a nice jolly crowd. And nearly all of them agreed to go to "Gym" at 9:00.
(They had all been "cutting") When they went (all but Bab - who
is a "special")Edith arrayed herself carefully
in her gym suit and in due time we went down there but if you please Miss
Edith didn't exercise, no indeed, she sat in
the gallery and looked on with me, much to the disgust of the other girls. Afterward
we went down to "Mead" and to the further most recesses of the cellars
where there's a mysterious room fitted up and
