"where the British landed". The water was blue the breeze fresh and the air clear "regular Mackinac weather" they called it - of so, it is fine. We went back to the boat at seven o'clock for dinner and afterward the steward (Laura's friend) insisted on strolling up town with us. Laura & I walked on up to the fort - (or nearly- to the archway) Saw some children coasting down with a baby carriage. Then we walked the back way across the fields (facing the sunset sky) to the Grand Hotel and then down the broad cement walk to town. It wasn't quite dark when we sailed - after nine - The "City of Alpena" came in just before and we watched the skylarking of some young people on board her - Some of them came in to the "Midland". A Mr & Mrs Henderson (young) and two young ladies with them - who afterward froze to the Governor. They were rather interesting tho'. The man a photographer. After we watched the lights of Mackinac out of sight we played Flinch in the cabin. Mrs. Colwell and I beat them tonight. Aug. 3. Wed. A lovely morning. Perfectly calm. Got to Thessalon early and went out for a walk ap- parently nothing but a dock but they say there is a thriving town "in back". Some Indians came sailing up just as we went away. Gulls followed us. We passed a beautiful white private yacht (but not the "Happy Lady")
