- Claude's friend - who had some pictures in
the August Scribner. We had a very nice afternoon. It was so lovely and
sunny and bright on deck - but cool, nevertheless - 54° in the sun along
toward "tea time - Mrs. M.
Laura and I disappeared, when Mrs.
Foster
went to take a nap. Laura took the lace
paper from our various candy boxes and made a "doiley" and I took the caraway
seed candies and decorated the Cake with "E.B. (?) F" and "1904" and rick-rack
around the edge and to candy hearts "I'll be true" and "in the morning" (the
best we could find in Mackinaw!) and in the middle set
my brass candlestick gift and one candle! Of course we could hardly
wait for dinner and at dessert the wonderful cake was
brought in - lighted! - and "attracted the attention of all these present".
Needless to say the Lady was overwhelmed with delight. After we'd had some it
was sent to the purser's table, and came back decorated with the cards of
those who indulged. It was really quite a grand dinner and we all kept our
"souvenir menus" that they'd been trying to pursuade us to send as postal
cards to our friends, all the way up. After supper
