's dock - He had come up with Mr. Howson. It was so fine, going back, that I rowed around by "Mandalay" and Chat was perfectly delighted with it. She said she would have bought it in a minute if she'd seen it first, and found several charming features which I had missed. I gathered some pine and cedar and flowers to keep - Claude's birthday and my island - Going down, back of St. Helena, Helen hailed us from Howson's, and we stopped and took her in. She got a dandy dinner and the Howson's were there to it and did seem to enjoy it. We had "mutton from Maerton
!" &c. Spent a long charming afternoon on the piazza. Chattie and I did fancy work and Helen read aloud. Rather late, we went over to Howson's and helped settle. Hamilton built a fire in the stove. I put up hooks and put away dishes &c.&c. When we looked out we saw numerous row- boats headed down the channel (ap- parently for "Sing-Sing"). As we were rowing home, Jim Hillis appeared, in- viting all of us & the Howsons, down there for the evening (Lucky he did, for we intended
