took the 5:15 train home - which was just right for a late supper at home (eggs &c.) and had lectures. Feb. 23. Tues. Dark and busy today. Zaza not here & Miss McCaffrey sick with the grippe. Klem Goodyear is to go to Will Wray's to work. I told her about it and she considers me "an unconsious messenger of good Saint Anthony of Padua" - who restore's what is lost! We made desserts at cooking - school tonight - but there was a big fire uptown which somewhat distracted me - and afterward I went up as far as Water St. with Zaza - Bickford furniture place burned and was quite spectacular. It was very near the Cook Opera House and Mgs. McCollum had the presence of mind to tell the audience there was trouble with the electric lights and they would have to be dispersed as the house would be dark in 10 minutes! No one knew about the fire until they got outside - and they were all sent out the front way (away from the fire). It was fine. It was awfully slippery going house - Dear old Zozie was outide and so glad to see me - the dear. I cuddled him and indexed my cookbook awhile when I got home.
