weird chase in the cloudy night). We tried to get
Belle
to go down, anyway, but she wouldn't tho' it was quite evident
she wanted to. Going back, I was coxswain - and
it was no joke when we got among the islands. We had a dandy welsh
rabbit about 11:30, Papa & Chat sitting up.
Aug. 3. Mon.
Another long night - rather - gray and breezy morning - Up about
nine, with an early call from Mrs. Howson, who is
great fun. Hamilton
is making rustic shelves in his room, and I spent most of what was
left of the morning making "Welcome Mother & Kate" in
fresh oak leaves, on the wall where the fire place is to be (my
"Welcome May" was about worn out!)
The family criticised it freely at dinner and decided it should be
"Katherine" instead of
"Kate", but I refused (It was lovely as it was) but offered to add "Ph.D." -
which they scorned. Called on the
Howson's after dinner, but they had gone fishing
- so we left our card (Helen & I)
a cedar leaf - in the door. Then dressed in our "Yachting togs" and
reefed up and started for the
Pointe, Hamilton,
Helen,
Charlotte and Mary, Papa
being left to tend house (He didn't feel very well, either, this
morning.) We had a "fair" wind and sailed up beautifully, with only a few
"short, tacks and long reaches", and Chattie decided she liked it.
