11/11/03 "Capt. Dieppe"
went to the gallery and Mary and I to the first row in the balcony to see John Drew in "Capt. Dieppe" a queer but entertaining play - a sort of a perverted dramatization of "The Indescretion of the Duchess". There was an an extra-swell audience to entertain us. J.G. & J.W. & their wives & Mrs Averill and H.P. Brewster (!) in one box. The 3 Whitneys, ex-Mayor Carnahan, H. Pow Franklin Brewster & Miss Carpenter in another, &c.&c. The audience entertained us almost as much as the play - but the play was all right. It began to rain, coming home. Nov. 12. Thurs Fine - Went over Behn's for a few minutes after supper but spent the evening mostly cross- stitching with Amelie in the east parlor - but Dr. Engert and Neal Knapp - John
, Theo and Mr Behn played poker in the dining room - and we joined them in a Dutch supper and a "rabbit" just before midnight. They are such eaters and drinkers - those men - cast iron stomachs, I'm sure. a hot bath made sleep possible!
