Aug 21 Fri. Kate Davis 'phoned me this morning to come up to lunch with her - which I did - She is just home from St. Helena, with great experiences to tell - was on the "Britannie" when the walking beam broke &c.&c. - but finally got here at midnight last night, via. Buffalo. Had a nice long letter from Hamilton - all about Napoleon's birthday. &c. &c. In the evening called on Edith, to return her sunbonnet. Heard the music box and saw her new folding bed. &c. Aug. 22. Sat. Sultry. Meant to make prints this p.m., but it clouded over, so didn't. Gilmore took me to lunch at the Whitcomb Grille - quite jolly - Then I went up to Claude's for an hour- found him quite jolly too, for a sick man - Helped Char open clams for broth - She gushed about the davenport which she has been sleeping on and thinks luxurious. Came home to loaf - write and read in my pretty room. Aug 23 Sun. Yesterday and this morning warm again - Take lots of baths - cold and otherwise - and am very comfortable.
