where I had a nice visit with Helen just back from Boston and Kate's - and staid to supper (Mother was at Cro'nest, and, Papa home) Hamilton rode home with me. And I went to bed Early - No "Pendennis" tonight - Papa is reading it aloud to us. Had a brief but Effective correspondence with Edith about "Oswald". And think she's straightened out now, but am I? That's the question!! Jun. 7. Sun. Cloudy all day, most but only a little rain this p.m. Spent the morning loafing and reading "The Better Sort" and "Tommy & Grizel" (again) After dinner went up for a nice little visit with Claude. Was going further, but it rained. Found Edith here when I got back and evidently "anxious to please" (!) She staid to sup- per and after, but Oswald wasn't mentioned. Indeed, I left no opening and I think the poor fellow must be dead and buried - but E's attitude is quite changed, apparently! Spent the rest of the evening writing up this fool journal. (I think E. consulted E.S. last night about O.!)
