Mon. Aug.4 Sept. 1 Labor Day , but you wouldn't know it except for the heat - But there was a gentle breeze, which made the piazza delightful and after a walk over to the "Shantie" with Alice & "Nan" We sat there all the morning - reading, talking and finally playing "Bridge" till dinner - a dinner which was bought from the Methodist Church, where they had a Celebration. The ice cream was particularly fine! After dinner we sat on the piazza awhile but then it clouded over and Ali Edith and Nan played tennis & Alice & I played Tetherball with Gurdon &c. and watched Barbara and her friend Agnes

& the soap-cart and "Hansy" the dachshund - Afterward we gave the tennis players a bath with the hose, out in front of the barn - while "Clarence" had gone for the cow and "Ben" and Gurdon were safely in the river - swimming. It is lovely and restful and the only signs of "Labor Day" are the big excursion steamers going past now and then we graced the piazza again all the evening and it was quite warm and a few
