As it got dark the "fireplace" glowed & Jim
Hillis
looked very picturesque, throwing in wood in the glow. Then the lit
a big bonfire - and by its light Belle
told me about her plans for going abroad next summer, and
when it was over we all went home. Hamilton
& Chat rowed back. (but very
unevenly)
Chat was tired and when she and Helen
get out, Hamilton said "come on" and
took me for a long row. The moonlight was simply gorgeous. We rowed
back of Wahbeck and up past "70" and out by "Co" and thro' the
narrow passage to the channel heard the "Britannie" at the wharf at the
Pointe. Came back the channel - meeting and hailing
several boats - and finally took back Howson's boat,
got ours, and rowed circling around Bonaparte Bay until the
Britannie came past, all lighted. The girls & "Papa" were still up, sitting on the piazza, and we
sat awhile, going to bed late - and such a night! neuralgia!!
Bats!!! (Chat & Helen
up with brooms. Then Hamilton &
remarks from "Papa" & I in our
several rooms) Then quiet and more neuralgia and finally the awful
sound of a drunken man, rowing past, whooping, pausing, giving 3 cheers
for St. Helena!
