at Mary's for a little visit
before coming home to a nice kitchen-supper with
Mother and an early start for bed.
May 20 Tues.
Letters from Papa from the Hill
and
Hotel Victoria, N.Y. indicate he's having a good time there.
Pierre Purcell gave him a pass and he went down "to
see the big building" and New York
and the Willards & his other friends there.
I must not forget to say that this isn't a "general" journal that
last week and the week before we have been much excited over the
5/8/02
great Volcano Mt. Pelee eruption
in Martinique on May
8th where 40,000 people perished and most fearful
phenomena occurred, followed by the eruption of Mt. Soufriere
on St. Vincent. Killing 1200 or 1500 more - all
with tidal waves lightning, thunder and fearful storms of ashes - 18
vessels were destroyed in St. Pierre harbor
and the whole city - no one escaped but a prisoner in the jail, who
is dying.
It is the most astonishing thing
of the kind that has happened in my life time - surely -
Today, we evacuate Cuba &
she is celebrating Freedom.
