We took the 4:55 train down (after the freight car was well loaded
with empty beer barrels, to Gurdon's
immoderate delight) and the horizon sank away - and crawling along the
road to the station we could see a black speck which the glasses
showed to be "Clarence" with the carriage and "Jen and Sue" who were all
waiting for us below. On the way back we stopped for Edith at the "Maple Grove House"
and came home another and a very pretty way - thro' covered bridges
&c. I sat with Edith and we
ate chicken sandwiches and indulged in sprightly|?| conversation. Were
quite ready for our late supper and of course had to tell
Hattie
and Anna "all about it". In the
evening we played bridge - but not long as we were all tired.
Sept. 4 Thurs.
It rained in the night and was a cloudy morning - (I spent on the
alluring piazza.) and
ab a little before noon there was a hard
shower. We watched it come down the river and gradually enfold us.
Gurdon
put on his bathing suit and went out into it and we all watched his
capers from the piazza. Later - and the most of the day, we sat on
the south piazza playing
bridge, reading and guessing charades and just
before supper Edith and I took a
