where there was a fire - a small one. Spent the evening writing "poems".

Quite a bit has happened lately. The coal strike
which has lasted all summer has become very serious because of cold
snaps and no prospect of settlement. Coal that we paid $5.75 for in May
they are selling (the few who have it at from $9.00 to $15.00 in
very small lots and in N.Y. it's up toward $20 and
very scarce. Soft coal has gone up too &
people are using bricks soaked in oil and any old thing in their store.
Claude and Charlotte
have been getting ready for the wedding day,
which will prob'ly be
Nov. 3. The house is being papered. I tried
to take a picture of it today, but think I fogged it putting in the slide.
Con has been to
Ogunquit & Malden and got
back. Had a fine time, but bad weather, as usual for him - at
Malden. Florence Biegler has
been there too. Kate Davis has gone to
Hamburg, Germany, (on the "Pretoria") for her
