went into the bowels of the ship and slid out of a door into a rowboat which Hamilton was trying to steady against the "ship" - while the people 'way above - on the deck remarked "Do you wonder people get drowned!" All this happened on the side away from St. Helena. So I only saw it revealed when the steamer started off. The girls stood in rows waiting for me - Helen - Charlotte - Mary Mac and Marjorie Fowler - Also Papa Davis. They had been waiting to hear me "gurgle" as I went down! The cottage and the island are beautiful. A big "Welcome May" in oak leaves greeted me - where the fireplace ought to be - when I entered the door. The living room and piazza are delightful - and for that matter, so are the kitchen and bed rooms and all - A nice fish dinner (which Mary & Hamilton got up at 5 to catch) and blueberries (which Chat & Marjorie
had been picking.) and such pretty china &c.&c. After dinner Hamilton took Helen and me for a sail up and down "Bonaparte Bay" (in front) and later he rowed us up to the Pointe - past the beautiful islands - "70" and the little cedar. The burning one "Clare" (Mr. Turner's) and the range light (where the milk barrel is) and to Will Oldfield's store and to Mr. McIntosh's (I beheld "Jack's "
famous smile which is most charming - but his calves - ! oh Helen!)
