St. car - but after about 4 minutes caught a
Linden St.
It was a race to Cro'nest. We
went faster than a carriage could, of course, but it was the longest
way 'round. We dashed up to the back door. Gave Louise
the box of flowers, and while Mother was
giving her a few final directions Con
& I dashed thro' the house - (up-stairs with only a box of
safety matches to light us with) for him to have just a glimpse of it -
Charlotte's lovely new inlaid mahogany
bedroom furniture - and all. We breathed a sight of relief when we
got out un- caught (we had seen two or three new things but had no
time to read the cards - and I had hastily to re-arranged the ferns
- discending the bamboo taborette someone had put them on) We were just
hurrying down the drive when we heard wheels at the foot and made a
grand flying detour across the Ramsdell's front drive and out the uphill way as the
carriage drove in below. We were walking demurely down the avenue (not
daring to wait under as light for a car) when
