fire, date : January 10,
1901. “…Of course the worst hurt ones-and nearly all those who were burned were
down toward
Greig Street and were taken to Shelley’s or Maxon’s. I’m so
thankful to say I only saw one who was burned-and that was the chamber
maid-
Miss Lawton-whose hands were pretty bad-but we thought that was all except
fright. Since then we have learned that her lungs were injured and she will probably lose the
sight of one eye. She was in fearful distress thinking her sister had perished-but she hadn’t and their meeting was something magic. We had Kittie [illegible] whose leg was fearfully cut and the other
ankle sprained. Then we had a fireman with a lacerated hand and two or three little ones who were suffocated….”
