It was a perfect October day and Con
invited me to go to Scottsville on the 5:40 train
& ride our wheels home by moonlight. It proved to be the most
perfect bicycle ride I’ve ever taken yet! We got to the Cargill House before half-past six –
ordered supper. Strolled about the town & down on to the bridge
where the moon was reflected in the still wide water and the mist
hung over the valley and far away a red light shown on the railroad. When
we got back to the hotel we were quite ready for a good supper &
each ate a large–sized beefsteak – besides other things. The moon was
gloriously bright – we started off about 7:30. The moon well up and
everything light as day – but soft silvery light and mist and fall –
smells of smoke and the sweet scents of autumn. The wind was at our
backs – now and then sighing among the tress – or rustling the rushes
or roaring over head – and we flying along bare–headed beside the
water and in the midst of all that loveliness. It was indescribably
fine. We stopped at the Junction for milk – and then staid because
we couldn’t get away – it was
1899.
