Cool day, but pleasant. Spent a nice morning reading &c. and
Miss Dowling (Gertrude
’s friend) and Con come to
dinner (which was good) Mama had a
woman serve & do the dishes and we all sat — till half-past five
— about the fire in the sitting room – talking & laughing &c. I
think both our guests enjoyed them– selvs – & each other
Con was funny &
Miss D.
seemed to appreciate his wit & it was quite a treat “to
have men around” – I found out she knew Freddie Cross when she was nine — & knows
Mary (who spent part of this morning
with me & I took her picture) and the Davis
girls and Lura. She also loves
“Alice in Wonderland” and Thackery – as I
do. Con got me in a corner and told
me about hearing from his Edith
again – after eight months — etc. etc. When Miss D.
had gone we went out & called on Mrs. Behn for a little while. The girls
are in Chicago. We had claret & little pretzels
& much “jollying” – Con staid to
supper & for the rest of the evening.
