(I driving) had a magnificent drive to
Wauwinet up past Sankaty Head – across
the purple moor – past the pond and on and on up to the little neck
called “Wauwinet” between the harbor-end and the
ocean – ‘a little hotel’ – all dining room – for fish dinner – a few
cottages– one being occupied by
Faversham, the actor, and some sailboats and dorys – That’s
about all – We saw the “L’lian” go out for “town” – found
scallop-shells on the shore and then walked across to the ocean – where
the beach is lovely and there is a rock or two – and a life line –
and dory go out to the lobster-pots. The drive home was even better
– but shorter – than the other – “Lady” flew some of the way – but
the fog was chasing her-in rifts and banks and veil-lets across the
moor – now all over us and now heaped on the hills – all
indescribably lovely. We sang all the way home – Mary leading – everything we could
possibly think off, too. Arrived just as the
supper bell rang.
1900.
