the shelter of a Pullman then! But we were
hot & dirty at Albany – where they left us – I
found the new train
much more comfortable – so kept on in a common
coach, but spent an hour in the driving car, over a good dinner (I’d
only had one sandwich – with the
Wilbur’s – at noon) The cause of Hattie
Richardson’s troubles appeared when she went on to
Syracuse – with a couple of men from the
Co. - She had evidently been “fired” – at “a doubtful”
(Schenectady) which coincided with the fat
girls' remarks – Mrs. Vaughn (?) still kept on - to
Rochester – but no words or looks passed
between her & the others. I read the
Farrendor’s
as long as it was light. Arrived – very dirty – at 9:45 - &
Papa met me – Had another supper –
with the dear family and almost–grown–up – Zo & Zen. Then a bath and
bed – so good to be home.
Aug 6. Mon.
First day at office – Gilmore gone –
Miss Gutman
going Saturday – Miss Flack there
– Lura’s at noon, with news of
Matie Hawley’s new baby. & a
chat with Nellie – Edith up to tea and a call from
Con at the office and this
evening at home. Today & yesterday very hot
