Building and City Hall, on the way. Mary wished she was going with me and “hated to have me go on alone” but I didn’t mind (The Penniman’s asked me very cordially to stay over) She said she should not go to Boston tomorrow, if it was hot. Rode to Albany (5 hours) with the Wilbur Opera Co. in which Mary had pointed out Maude Daniels, Hattie Richardson, Gus Vaughn (now leading man) Chas Vaughn &c. (I knew some, myself.) “Miss Pingree

” – a typical chorus girl, sat behind me – Gus & his Mama (evidently) & a young woman (wife? or leading lady?) ate chicken & drank bottled beer a good deal of the way – a fat girl told “Miss Pingree
” her troubles – with another girl. Lor She’s just trying to think up something to do before we got off this train. Look at her rubberin' around that paper now! &c. &c. A fond young couple (the best looking of the lot) went to sleep in each other’s arms and the jolly girls lost no time with combs, towels, looking glasses & a lost young man. I was amusement, anyway, during a hot & dusty season & nothing would have hired me to seek
