boys were there & I stayed to supper – 'cause they were pretty forlorn & wanted me to. Jan. 17th Thurs. Was calmly writing to Gellett Burgess with some prints tonight when in walked 8 of the Perfects and Mrs. Baker! a surprise! and a real one. Only Mama knew it – we had a jolly time – played cards – drew picture of animals for a prize – (I got it for drawing a donkey) – a white and gold upright piano! Then we ate a delicious supper the girls brought and played Crambo - Mabel was the star rhymster – as usual. and in fact she got up the whole thing and was awfully funny. I went to bed at one! Got a big Christmas illustrated New-Zealand paper from Mr. Oliver – and wrote my semi-annual letter. Jan. 30. Wed. Two “functions” tonight – Amelie and John Frey had their announcement reception – very nice indeed – I went over for a few minutes about nine and then right to Mary’s to the Perfect party – Pedro – and a jolly time. Mary Allen & Frederica filled out the table and Mabel had a poem – about the surprise at our house – quite funny.
