After supper Mary settled down to read “Red Pottage” but I couldn’t settle down to anything. Fixed two refractory Kodaks for people. Talked a little while to Mr. Philip Getty, and then went to “the village” with Miss Fichtner – bought home – made candy at the “Gift Shop” and went down on the beach where we tied up the awning – and then watched the dear big mysterious ocean calling us out into the soft gray fog – beckoning – beckoning reaching – reaching – and talking talking all the time. It was worth a journey from Rochester. When we turned to go back the soft outlines of the cottages & homes at the fog and the halo-ed lights might have been almost any place we wished to imagine it. We went to the crowded post office – and “Arthur” the clerk gave me a nice letter from Mother-dear. I answered it – while Mr. Getty talked to me. We have a colored porter “Scott”, who sings “Because I love you”! etc. etc.
