“Richard Carvel” and petted my darling little
Rudolph – who grew lovelier every day. He
was certainly the nicest little cat I ever knew so tame – so purry and
sweet and fearless and loving. We all just loved the little fellow –
and he was growing so handsome – His coat was so thick & soft
and his little paws so white. I can’t bear to put down that his
bright little life is ended. Last Thursday -
O’Kane’s man ran over his little front leg and
broke it so badly it couldn’t be mended without his suffering (He
didn’t whimper – the darling!) and I had to
pluck up courge to tell the doctor to put him to sleep with chloroform
before it began to make him suffer. I can’t bear to think of it and
last night I cried myself to sleep – and we all feel so – The brave
little cat – I hope he’s happy if we are terribly lonesome without him! I haven’t one
good picture of him since he got big but it seems as tho’ I remembered every curve of his little body and
neck and restless little paws – and bright beautiful clear eyes and
such
playful ways. He was playing with the leaves
1899.
