Wed. July 25
A breezy, pleasant day. Went to the “china closet” this morning and
saw a lot of old china – and then down under the tent for a loaf
and a dip into “The light that failed”
before
our bath. Had a fine bath. Mr. Philip Getty took
me out into the big waves to “jump” them. It was gorgeous till I
swallowed a pint or so of salt water. Had a long sun bath on
my rug with the girls and was the last one dressed. Was late to
dinner because I had a long and interesting talk with
Capt. Folger about his whaling & codding and
life saving and “merchant service” in the Pacific and
the wrecks he’d seen &c. &c. He is an old dear who lost most
of his hearing when he was 18, on acct of being pulled down
under water by a whale! After dinner Mary, Miss F.
, & I walked down to the golf links & back. Then
