July 6. Thurs. Woke up in a perspiration this morning, but it proved not so warm later – and a nice breeze on the lake – for we spent the entire day on lovely Lake George. Took the train to Caldwell and left the dock there at 9:30 going up the lake from dock to dock. Parts of it are lovely. The Katts- Kill House looked very inviting, and a number of private places. Up beyond the Narrows it got very wild (the foot of Black Mountain) and the Captain said the woods were as wild as could be found anywhere – full of bear and deer etc. At Roger’s Slide they told us how this “Rogers” was pursued by Indians to the brink of the precipice, whereupon he put on his snow shoes backwards and retraced his steps – going down another way – but the Indians tho't two people had leaped from the edge, &he escaped! At Baldwin – where people take the train for Champlain – others got on and our ride back to Bolton was even more delightful – a nice breeze and in front of us a shower – which made beautiful cloud–pictures – and little white clouds con- tinually hugging the peaks. The steamers are fine – This was the “Horicon” (old name of the Lake) Captain Harris – an old man, who pointed out the scenes of Cooper’s stories etc. The
