Feb. 8th Wed.
My darling Ned died Monday at
one o’clock – That’s all I can think of and over and over again in
my head sings the refrain which
Claude was singing just before he went
to New York with
Wilkinson “Beautiful Evelyn Hope
is dead”. Will came
yesterday
7th
and brought her dear body and the lovely baby Phyllis
(whom he will call “Helen”) and the nurse I was over
there – at Mrs. Rose's – Monday
night, after I got the telegram and yesterday afternoon and night
and there were things to do and people to see and flowers to arrange
and Mrs. Rose to comfort and poor
Will – I let him talk to me an
hour about Ned – but I can’t write it
down – Only this - that she died because she willed it so and no
power on earth could prevent. Physically she was doing finely – but
mentally – oh, the poor child – to think
what she suffered! She wanted Chat to
take the baby – Mae
and John want it very much, but
1899.
