Aug. 21st Monday Cool and pleasant. J.G. went to N.Y. and the seashore. Ned came up at five and I went to the car with her. We got a letter from Mate Willard inviting us to Hemlock and I guess we'll go Saturday. Read "The Tragic Muse" till all hours - finished it. Aug. 22. Tuesday Marjorie Gilmore spent the day at the office. I took care of her in the p.m. while her father & mother went to a funeral. She says she loves me - &c. & enjoyed herself. Will was up at noon to tell me that Ben Mitchell is going to N.Y. this winter and they are to room together, perhaps take a "studio." In fact, make confirmed bachelors of themselves, Will says with a sigh! He also says Ben is not engaged to Alice Laidlaw - but has been down to Boston to see her. Frank telephoned this noon to know if I'd be home to- night - & I said "Yes" - tho' I had almost a sick headache. Belle Cotchefer was here when he came and made an appointment.
