but found I had not associated it with its name. The Fine
Art Bldg. (by Har- denbergh - who did the
Waldorf) is pretty fine, I think. Mosaics in
the vestibule - is well lighted in the galleries, &c.&c.
Ned took me in and there were 3 rooms
of paintings and two of pottery - besides cases & cases of old silver
and curios and a lot of Barye's bronzes and a mammoth
model of French's statue of "The Republic" which is to
be at the World's Fair. There were
"Van Dykes" & "Reynolds" as & a
"Turner" (which I recognized from engravings of
his) - nice little "Rico" - a "Bogereau" some
"Corots" and a "Millais" &c. &c. a
wall full of modern impressionists a pair of immense silver altar
candle sticks (lent by Stan. White)
Ancient Greek pottery -
Peachblow
ware - Chinese vases carved from precious stones. "Family portraits"
(a la Thackery - Lady So-and-so as a shepherdess"). I
enjoyed some fine old silver & some Norwegian silver (wedding
belts &c) a pair of silver tankard vases given to Gov.
