June 5. Monday Cool and cloudy. Breakfasted at 7:30 and took the electric car to the extreme south end of the Fair ground. Entering by gate and stock yard part. Saw the cliff dwellers, the "whaler", the wind mills & the lovely big "Coliseum" with tanbark covered ground & entered the real part - around the basins through the Colonnade - and it did look beautiful - the gray sky set off the white tips of the buildings and the peristyle & made the "Republic" gleam. We went up into the Administration & out on the upper balcony - and there had the best view of the beautiful MacMonnie fountain. Then walked all along the south & east sides of the Liberal Arts Bldg. under the arcades & saw the decorations. Passed Van Houten's cocoa place - a quaint Dutch house - with tiled walls & fire places- 500 year old doors - beds in the wall - desks, clocks, mirrors &c all old Dutch & the pretty waitresses dressed accordingly. Then walked along the lake promenade passed the big guns, piles of shells, & encampment in front of the Gov't Bldg.
