to put it off and go to the Fair in- stead, as the Spanish Infanta Eulalia was to come and the music was to be fine, etc. Went right down to the Plaisance, & into the Jap. Bazaar, where we saw Mr. Jetsuka of Rochester . Then went right down to the Chinese Theatre, but only saw the last of the performance, dances before a minister of State - very gaudy, a gaily dressed man with two boquets on a string dancing with them - Men talking women's parts &c. &c. Very queer & interesting. As it was time for the Princess, we went up in the Joss House (full of Dragons! & things), and out on the balcony, where, finally, the actors all came out & ranged themselves (in costume) in carved chairs on tables up behind us. & jabbered away & were very polite & funny & grotesque, a big green, yellow & purple dressed Mandarin, with immense false beard hilariously waving a U.S. flag at a Spanish princess is quite a sight.
