June 4. Sunday I rested some but woke up very early - in the moonlight. Read some & made an early toilet. Ate some oranges with Claude and Edward and talked to a woman who "cultivated" us - a school- teacher, I imagine. Claude was quite nice to her - gave her the lower berth, &c. and she seemed to appreciate it! Ned, Claude & I got out at Grand Cross- ing - and after a very round-about journey by 3 lines of street cars reached Windsor Park - and on the way had our first glimpse of the "White City" - which seemed almost like a dream - or a mirage - compared with the squalid little hotels, the mud and the general awfulness of Stoney Island Avenue. We found our big hotel - a crowd on the front piazza - and were lucky enough to secure two nice rooms - opposite each other - the first floor, north side - 409 & 410. Dressed and had a very decent breakfast and then went in the writing room & wrote to Mama & when our satchels came, we put on our light silk waists & cooled off
