We four spent the evening on the Beach, byt some bonfires - talking June 13 Tuesday The Allens left to-day & Claude moved to a private house and I was too sick & faint to go to the Fair & was glad we had decided on the wagonettes - but we couldn't get a seat in them - so - as it was a lovely day - Will took Ned & me to Chicago & got a Victoria with driver and big gray horse & we drove 2 or 3 hours up thro' the city to the North Side - out the boulevard - past Rob't Lincoln's house, & the Virginia & Potter Palmer's &c. into Lincoln Park - where we saw the St. Gauden's Statue of Lincoln - one of Gen. Grant on horseback - & more - the garden, the animals - the ponds - the lake & the lovely park itself. It was really a most delightful ride & a comfortable carriage. They left us at Marshall Field's, where we lunched & shopped and then went down to Guy's office (by way of Gunter's) for soda - where we saw the Picks) & left Ned & just caught the 4 p.m. train.
