saw me on the car at eight o'clock or before. The streets were crowded. When I got home I read by the fire again. Went to bed almost in a doze at last. Oct. 1 Sunday. A glorious, sparkling October day. Was too late for Church, unfortunately, so at eleven or so I took Papa & Henry James "Siege of London" and went out to Highland Park. It was lovely. We sat and looked at the valley a long time in the bright sunshine. Then went up into the [illegible] (where I saw Matie McArthur) and Papa left me. Went down to the seat under the chestnut tree and read & watched the valley & the squirrels & floweres & things. It got breezy so I sat in the sun awhile and so did as Morris Place used to advise me - took a sunbath. Almost fell asleep. It is quite as luxurious as a Turkish bath, seems to me.
