with us and we had a comfortable journey to Livonia, tho' a crowd got on at Avon. The stage was waiting - 5 seated - and a handsome young driver (with a cigar) Mama & Ned had the back seat and I sat opposite them - a young lady & an oldish man were the rest of the party. Had a very jolly ride and a beautiful one - about seven miles I think. We reached "Slab City" at last. Stopping to leave a ham and notes &c and a package for a young woman in a blue satin & velvet Eton suit (!) - a blonde. At the St. James we were driven down to the pier and found that the boat didn't go till one (It was 11:40 then) so we tried the various rustic seats and watched a brilliantly dressed family picnic eat dinner and saw "Oliver" (someone) talking to a pretty girl & talked to each other & grew hungrier and hungrier. At last we started & got up to way back in no time - only stopping at Tom Karl's to leave some express.
