We went thro' Carlton Place & down the pretty walk
on West Avenue to the asphalt & then way down
to Ford & thro' on the dirt road to
Adams, where we passed "George", the popcorn
man & his funny little donkey & we passed
MacArthur's later. I stopped there a few
minutes - Found we'd gone nearly 11 miles.
Frank Davis was there. I came home to a
delicious lunch and then wrote & read. Found
Frank Decker had been here again for Mama to entertain.
May 25th Monday
Walked this morning, as I had some shopping to do. Got down early
too. Rode this p.m. Met
Ned, as I was coming home, and she persuaded
me to stay down to supper with her at Harned's. So I went back & telephoned Mama (orphan
asylum) while Ned put
my wheel away. We had a nice cozy chat & supper (coffee, creamed
potatoes & toast) and then up in her room we sat till dark &
talked by the window - watching the strange gray light come & go &
fade. When the gas was lit I read aloud to her a story from
Harper's - It rained some, but I went home on Diana
between showers, in the blackness of night. Sewed some and read.
After midnight, or so, it
May 26. Tuesday
thundered & lightened most incessantly, so as to keep me awake -
or nearly so - till 'most morning. It was too muddy to ride down, but
I did so this p.m. in spite of wind. I went around by
Central Avenue and saw "The Rivals",
special train ("Sheridan" & "The Rivals")
tonight, & stopped a moment
1896.
