wrote letter and read "The Hon. Peter Sterling" - a
very interesting book which I have also devoted my few spare even-
ings to this week. It's one Wiltsie had
at
Ogunquit, Mrs Field, Miss
Dennis read & liked it and when I got home I found
Geo. Humphrey had lent it to
Papa. Helen
Davis came over late this p.m. and staid to tea &
till 8 or so. She looked very sweet in her green dimity and white
collar and pretty little hat. We talked Maine &
Boston & "Jewel's" and
gymnastics & so on. She has an offer to go to Grand
Rapids. Thinks its pretty far.
Mon. Aug. 17.Frederica came Saturday so I went down
to see her tonight and calledEdith & I spent most of the
evening there, learning about Stony
Lake & the girls (I'm glad I didn't go - dear
Ogunquit!)
Tues. Aug. 18.
Finished "Peter Stirling" tonight. A very enjoyable
book - "a subtle defence of Tammany"
Geo. Humphrey says - It may be so. I
got a pretty little book of blue prints ready to send to Miss Iles too - "Chollie"
Wed. Aug. 19.
Had a lovely letter from Alice
today returning the photographs, with which they are all delighted.
I had 8 dozen and not a failure - but Bunnell lost 3 negatives and the ones Alice & Mrs.
Perrin tried to take were failures because they didn't
press the button. Had a chat with Lura
in the street. Met some "Wilburs". &c.
