us with gum and started us off. We went home by "the
Lane" or Chase's pond
road - the same I had explored yester- day - and again such lovely
vistas and such delightful spots and views & breezes &
scents and visitors. Oh! it was delightful
altogether. We got home before the buckboard, but not before the
bicyclers - and all did ample justice to a good dinner (about two
o'clock.) I was overcome with sleep, afterward, but didn't sleep any.
We went over and "laved" about 3:30.
Mrs. M., Mrs. P.,
Miss B. & I - & the children. The ocean
was very cold - some bathed in the river - which was shallow &
warm. A stiff breeze blew spray back from the crests of the breakers
and they came rolling in. It was all we could do to come down the hill
against the breeze, coming back from our bath. The hour to supper
time was quickly spent on the piazza & inside and after "steamed
clams" &c. We, that is, Wiltsie,
Ruth
& I
went fishing for flounders on the bridge, while the rest gathered drift-
wood on long beach for a bonfire. It was a gorgeous night. The sea
as blue as sapphire & the sky as clear a few little clouds pink
& golden tinted
