May Bragdon Diary, April 6, 1896, p. 29
1896.
Apr. 6. Monday
Walked up to
Adams St.
(on
Exchange
) with
Mary
this noon. Had a nice long letter
from
Ned
.
Mary Young
is down in
N.Y.
& they
are having good time together. I had to
dress rather fast for
Lura
's party tonight.
Stopped for
Mary
who wore a gorgeous
new pink silk & chiffon waist & we didn't
get there till nearly nine.
Mary
made
me wear the violets "
George
' gave her. They
were lovely. As we were arriving
Lura
announced that the party was to announce
the engagement of
Matie Arnold
! Soon
she arrived, with
Mrs. Arnold
and the
young man,
Mr. "Bob." Hawley, Jr.
of
Williamstown, N.Y.
, wholesale furniture
dealer, &c. He proved very pleasant & very -
nice - correct in dress, manners, looks &
conversation (he's quite brilliant at
the latter.) He was perfectly pleasant
self - possessed & at his ease.
Matie
appeared
well & was rather demure. His eyes
followed her, but he didn't. He got
acquainted with her friends. The guests
were -
Matie
,
"Bob"
,
Mrs. Arnold
,
Mrs. Si. Weaver
Mr.
&
Mrs. Bert Brower
,
Dr. Hubner
,
Dr. Yours
,
Mr.
Clifford Shaw
,
Mr. Benidict
, Mr.? (from the "store".)
Frank
Davis
,
Charlotte
,
Mary
,
Bessie Smith
,
Miss Bruce
,
Mabel Rogers
,
Miss Cunningham ("Cunny")
Mr. DeGraff
which, with
Lura
,
Mrs. Baker
& we made 20 - 5 tables
(& more). We had pink pin cushions for markers
1896.
