great deal at breakfast. Wiltsie gave me an apollinaris bottle - in straw - to carry down, to make me feel "sporty" and we rigged up with sweaters & things, but Capt. Hamilton first looked dubious. Then said we couldn't fish outside, possibly, without swamping the boat, then said all the regular boats had come in, then advised us to wait till afternoon - in fact did everything but absolutely refuse to go. We consented to wait till afternoon. Found things all unsettled when we got back. Everyone wanted to do something "it was such a lovely day" - but nobody did - People from the Washington passed - going berrying - others going buck boarding &c. &c. Mrs. Miller got to the point where she hid her embroidery when people passed! Finally she & Mrs. Perrin started off for a little ride - and Alice and Wiltsie - when they returned from down town, pursuaded me to put my pedals on again and do likewise (I was getting the wheel ready to crate) I changed my shirt and shoes and started away up the lane. It was gorgeous! About a mile up I met Mrs. M & Mrs. P. returning - but didn't turn back. That road is delightful. I could never tire of it, seems to me. I followed our way home from Ag-
