the McKinley & Hobart parade. Murray Crosby
got on the car as we got off, and after watching the two 12th
Ward companies form & march down Monroe
Ave & we went up Meigs St. to
Mrs. Crosby's where we talked, looked at photographs
and ate chestnuts. Then came away to
East Avenue (the line was all brilliantly il-
luminated) and stood on the curb till nearly nine. Eating chestnuts,
watching the bicyclists & others, & listening to remarks &
making them ourselves. The bicycle club led the parade. Wm. was in it, of course. Then
the policemen-horses - (Mr. Leyden)
"Company A" etc. about 40 different com- panies & the
Grenidiers (12th ward reds) in the rear. All
did well & looked nice and there was much enthusiasm & applause.
It was a very long time passing & then we started up
Meigs St. and before we got to Park
Avenue, back came the first of it again, having been &
way up around thro' Oxford - of course we staid
& watched it again. Then took the car for home and after eating
grapes & telling "Papa Davis"
about it, I went to bed with Helen.
Oct. 16. Fri.
And slept very well indeed. Mr.
Davis
called us at quarter of 7 & we got up at quarter after or so.
Ate breakfast with
Charlotte, but didn't get ready to go
down with her. Left the house about 8:35 or so. It was a gray
morning & growing colder.
J.G. started for the Sturges
dinner in N.Y. and
1896.
