passed us - going toward town. We saw a number of people we knew - Ned & Frank nearer home. When we got up to the "Cargill House" we found wheels stacked everywhere & wheelmen very numerous, tho' it was five o'clock. Matie & Mary ordered supper, which was served us about 5:30, beefsteak, coffee, potato, bread & butter, celery, jell &c &c. very good indeed and we had a very jolly time. In the midst of it the real supper bell rang and one man came in, of course we kept him amused and succeeded in winning over the waitress to say nice things about us. They only charged us 40¢ a piece. We took a (very short) ride "thro' the town" and then started off for the Erie station - nearly 3 miles away - in the gathering gloom. The roads were good, fortunately, and the ride was a "weird and wonderful" one - forms loomed ahead - sometimes to dissolve and sometimes to materialize into horses and wagons, dark bushes sped away behind us & mysterious road-creatures below, holes? mud? or what? Mary & I dismounted on a high bridge which spanned the Genesee - steep banks - motionless water and a misty crescent moon reflected.
