and the suburbs, one by one, even to Concord
the lovely, in the evening light. I read the "Bow of Orange
Ribbon" till 9:30, when my berth, the last, was made up and I
turned in. I slept very well - waking now and then but going right
to sleep again. Had a dream, a strange one - about Alice and
Wiltsie and myself - and my ocean!
Aug. 2. Sunday
Early morning in N.Y. state found the rain
pattering against the windows and some places
Utica & Syracuse, for
instance, very wet indeed. I got up after we left
Syracuse and a young lady from St. Louis was
moved to scrape acquaintance with me. I read and gazed till we reached the
dear city. The sun shining and things drying after the rain.
Papa met me and we took the car home
to a welcome from the other two at the steps. A nice breakfast and
rest. Did nothing "serious" but unpack my trunk, wrote, read, went to
sleep on the divan and later entertained Edith and then Mary
too on the piazza. We had a good deal of visiting to do and the dear
girls were dear as ever. They tell me Ella
Wray is very ill indeed with typhoid pneumonia
and Jennie Frazier a young lady I often met at
McArthur's, is dead ! I walked down
to Adams St.
Then came home to lunch and letter writing.
Aug. 3. Monday
Didn't get down to "grinding" very early, stop- ping to interview
Hovey. Found J.W.
there and all evidently glad to see me - cordial, any way. Didn't do
much work and did
