En route. Rochester.
and the suburbs, one by one, even to Concord the lovely, in the evening light. I read the "Bow of Orange Ribbon" till 9:30, when my berth, the last, was made up and I turned in. I slept very well - waking now and then but going right to sleep again. Had a dream, a strange one - about Alice and Wiltsie and myself - and my ocean! Aug. 2. Sunday Early morning in N.Y. state found the rain pattering against the windows and some places Utica & Syracuse, for instance, very wet indeed. I got up after we left Syracuse and a young lady from St. Louis was moved to scrape acquaintance with me. I read and gazed till we reached the dear city. The sun shining and things drying after the rain. Papa met me and we took the car home to a welcome from the other two at the steps. A nice breakfast and rest. Did nothing "serious" but unpack my trunk, wrote, read, went to sleep on the divan and later entertained Edith and then Mary too on the piazza. We had a good deal of visiting to do and the dear girls were dear as ever. They tell me Ella Wray is very ill indeed with typhoid pneumonia and Jennie Frazier a young lady I often met at McArthur's, is dead ! I walked down to Adams St. Then came home to lunch and letter writing. Aug. 3. Monday Didn't get down to "grinding" very early, stop- ping to interview Hovey. Found J.W. there and all evidently glad to see me - cordial, any way. Didn't do much work and did
