the telegrams in bunches now & then & we checked off the
states. Rochester returns came first (early) 6208
for McKinley (went 5000 for
Cleveland 4 years ago!) It was evident shortly after
10:30, that he was elected "McKinley &
Hobart" and "Black &
Woodruff" (State ticket) and the search light
showed it & the crowd hooted & marched & tooted - &
Co. A. came down 16 abreast - all with yellow
crysanthums, & with a live rooster ahead. It was quite a sight -
my first - of election night. We had a jolly time - chestnuts - sponge
cakes - apples & sandwiches &c. Put Lura on the 11:15 car & then went over into Smith's arcade
a minute (where the McArthur's
were). Mama
& I took the 11:30 car home - with Miss Wiltsie
of the R.O.A. and the Milliman's. Was
dead tired.
Nov. 4th. Wed.
Pleasant - but more suggestions of rain. J.G. & everyone else with a broad smile - happy about
sound money. Got 50 Ogunquit pictures
from Alice - lovely ones - & wrote
to her tonight.
Claude came home and told me about his
class and the "deadly ladies". Tired out tonight.
Nov. 5th Thurs.
A rainy & windy day (no wheeling) and a wild night ("The trees
are sighing aloud and shipspe are tossed at
sea" &c)
Stopped for Mary tho' - and she went to "gym" with me. Rose
Kernine rode over in the car with us.
Charlotte didn't come as we expected, but
there was a larger class than usual - Ned, Rose,
1896.
