Miss Howard & her sister came over a little while - we went home soon afternoon. There was a moist coolness in the air - & fog & gunpowder. Mr. Allen was there a few minutes. Claude shot off the rockets candles & Col. Tappan the rockets. July 5. Sunday Cloudy morning. Nice long sleep. Fixed boquets, wrote &c. Sunshine later. Got dressed about 4 or so and rode down to Mary's. Found she & Alice were at the park so after a little talk with Emma I rode out there. The Crosby's caught up with me on Plymouth Ave. hill - Mrs. C.

was very puffy. & fat & looks funny on a wheel. She seems to enjoy it, tho'. Found the girls out on a seat under a tree across from the pavilion & we sat there an hour in the coolness, watching people - listening to the music & talking Stony Lake &c. Rode back about six - had lunch, & was reading Harper's on the steps when Rose Mills came - looking so pretty. She staid a long time & we talked. She told me about her cousin, Sarah Brown, who is engaged to her elder brother. They go to Sidney together tomorrow. She told me about her visit to Buffalo &c. and she hope's to get a room near Ned next fall.
