May 18th Monday
It was a bright morning & after our breakfast & a little
sewing & a chat with
Mr. & Mrs. John, Ned & I started forth on wheels for down town - with
no other mishaps than that I stepped on my dress & fell off when
I mounted, & later ran into a large black dog. He yelled - but there
was no other mishap. When I got home from the office at noon I found
I was invited to a card party in honor of "Matie & Bob
" at Mabel
Roger's tonight. I chased Mary down the avenue & we decided to go. While I was
dressing tonight
Ned came up on her wheel & we had
another 'tear" upstairs. I felt gay & I was late in consequence,
but Mary didn't mind. I took her
some of my lilies of the valley. When we'd gotten introduced &c. I
found I was to play with Dr. Marion (he being
"Thackery" & I "Pendennis") & we won
the game. I kept on winning, too - & drinking Roman punch in
between - till I had to cut with Matie for
first prize - of course she got it. A Japanese cream & sugar
set. Dr. M. got a silver nail file, Jim
Burroughs was there & talked Yachting & everybody
talked "wheels" and
Bob
& Matie smiled at each other and
finally we got away - only to walk
nearly are the way home with Mr.
DeGraff. He did his best to be entertaining & succeeded
pretty well. Arrived at 1:05, "Functions" are slow, after all.
Papa has gone to
Utica.
