steps a long time - and John went & got beer and made us each drink a "pony" of the horrid stuff - worse than my malt. But we've both started out to "do as the Romans do". May 17th Sunday We went to bed in Mae's pretty little south east - white guest room. Quite a coolish night. Ned & I talked, as usual, but both slept well. I woke up early enough to see it begin to rain - before seven - but dozed again. We didn't have breakfast till two. It rained very hard for a while. Then cleared off and began a wind storm. We had a delicious breakfast & were jolly. Ned, Mae & I all smoked with John after breakfast - and before the dishes were done Frank Davis came to go riding, but said the roads were horrid & the wind bad - so he and John went out on the piazza and cleaned the wheels. We did that & loafed around & took "interiors" and talked & joked all day, laughed mostly - Frank went home about one or so and we had dinner at 3:30 - another delicious meal, Mae's dining room and table furniture, dishes & silver are particularly lovely, and her Kitchen things, too. It's like playing dolls, & she's such a fine cook. We had sweet breads, salad, blancmange &c. &c. for dinner. Edith came just as we were finishing and was shocked of course, to see us take our cigarettes with John. The rest of the day
